How long may I wear a menstrual cup?

On the Internet you can read different stories on forums and menstrual cup websites. One reputable brand tells you to keep the cup in for 8 to 12 hours, while another brand says that emptying it 2-3 times a day is sufficient. There are even brands that claim you can just keep the menstrual cup in all day without any worries. However, we advise you not to wear the cup longer than 8 hours. By the way, this applies to all menstrual products.

People also claim that wearing a menstrual cup does not put you at risk of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome, also known as tampon disease) because the menstrual cup is non-absorbent. We don’t quite agree. There has been one incident of TSS associated with the use of a menstrual cup in Canada. You can read more information here.

So don’t take an unnecessary risk and make sure you empty and clean your menstrual cup at least every 8 hours.

What can you do to reduce the risk of TSS?

– Hygiene! Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before coming in contact with the menstrual cup. Also wash your hands thoroughly after inserting the menstrual cup.

– Make sure you clean and disinfect your menstrual cup properly. You can read exactly how to do this here. If you have any of the symptoms listed below, remove the BeppyCUP immediately and seek medical advice as soon as possible. When doing so, explain to the doctor that you are menstruating.
