What is a light menstruation?
Light menstruation, also known as hypomenorrhea, means that blood loss is less than average. This can range from just a few drops a day to a short period of one or two days. Some people experience this as normal, while for others it may be a sign of an underlying cause.
Characteristics of light menstruation
- Less than 30 ml of blood loss per cycle (normal is 30-40 ml).
- Menstruation lasts less than 2 days.
- Sometimes only light spotting instead of actual bleeding.
Causes of light menstruation
- Hormonal changes, such as low estrogen levels.
- Use of hormonal contraception, such as the pill or hormonal IUD.
- PCOS or thyroid problems.
- Stress, weight loss or intense training.
- Perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause.
When should you see a doctor?
If your period suddenly becomes much lighter for no apparent reason or if your cycle becomes irregular, it may be wise to consult a doctor.
